Tony Roberts Favour the present tense
نویسنده
چکیده
I recommend the rule “if in doubt use the present tense”. Higham (1998), [1], §4.29 The present tense works well for scientific writing. The eternal truths we present in an article should all be in the present tense: instead of “experiments have shown that”, prefer “experiments show that”. The present tense helps make more active writing. Write derivations in the present tense: not the past tense of “where we have assumed R = {k1, . . . , kr}” but instead “where we assume R = {k1, . . . , kr}”; nor the future tense of “As we will scale later the Hamiltonian with the inverse temperature”, but instead “As we scale the Hamiltonian with the inverse temperature, Section 4,”. Generally avoid “will”: prefer “The potential in Example 2 is central” to “The potential in Example 2 will be central”.

متن کاملThe syntax of complex tenses
This paper presents some new arguments in favour of the biclausal analysis of the socalled periphrastic tenses. It is argued that in these constructions, the main verbs as well as the auxiliaries are marked for tense. It is also claimed that every clause contains two temporal heads: a higher T(Past) and a lower T(Future). The biclausality of periphrastic tenses is then a consequence of the way ...

The violation is arguably caused by a mismatch between the semantics of the temporal adverb in the topic posi...

This paper describes work in progress on a corpus-based study, comparing seemingly similar registers in two languages: English and German newsgroup texts, collected in the Bremen Translation Corpus. I will focus on three systems of the finite verbal group, i.e. tense, mo...
